Used Centrifuge: What to Check Before You Buy

In a used centrifuge the most important part is the rotor: it must match the model, be in good condition without corrosion or cracks, and fit your tubes. Then check maximum speed and RCF, cooling if you need it, the lid lock, the imbalance sensor, and support and spare parts for the model.

The rotor

Performance

Check the maximum speed (RPM), the relative centrifugal force (RCF, in g) the rotor allows, and the capacity. RCF is what determines the result, so compare by RCF and not only RPM.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between RPM and RCF?

RPM is revolutions per minute. RCF is the actual force on the sample and also depends on the rotor radius. Protocols usually specify RCF.

Can I use a rotor from another model?

Only a rotor the manufacturer approves for that model. An unapproved rotor is dangerous.
